Hey, there is a new Rhino-related course at and I didn’t do it! Even so, I found it excellent. This one was written by Chris Reilly and he really know his stuff.

Grasshopper—a plugin for the Rhinoceros 3D modeling package—is a graphical algorithm editor that takes advantage of Rhino’s existing tools. Grasshopper offers new ways to expand and control the 3D design and modeling processes, including automating repetitive processes; generating geometry through mathematical functions; quickly making changes to complex models; and creating complex forms through repetitions of simple geometry.



New V-Ray Service Pack 1 is Released

The first service pack for V-Ray for Rhino 2.00 has been released by ChaosGroup. This update is totally free to all owners of V-Ray 2.00 and can be downloaded from the ChaosGroup download section, (registration required.) I have been using it for a while and my favorite bug fix has got to be the ‘missing texture maps when you change computers. Damn, that drove me nuts for months! Anyway, it’s fixed and my life has definitely improved by 47% or more.

A few of the new and improved features include:

• Batch Render: Easily queue up files and specific views to be rendered in a batch process.
• Show in Viewport: With the new texture manipulation option you can now control which textures will be visible in the Rhino viewport.
• Pack all V-Ray Materials: Archive your V-Ray for Rhino materials and all external files into a single ZIP for easy sharing and back up.
• Improved support for using V-Ray Frame Buffer Channels.
• New toolbar for Batch Render, Guess Lens Shift, Edit Material and set Focus Point tools.
• All new support documentation — finally!

New nVidia Lighting Technology Demo: On the Moon!

lunar-roverThis is especially cool since the nVidia scientists and programmers modeled and rendered the historic Apollo Lunar lander scenes down to every last detail. I loved how the producers mentioned several of the nutty conspiracy theories that claimed how it was all faked, but how the data being used by the conspiracy theorists was just plain wrong.

The scientific de-bunking of the ‘lunar truthers’ was wonderful, but you always need to mention that there was not just one manned mission to the moon; there was six total, including one with a really cool car. The car is still there, so check it out the next time you’re in the neighborhood.

Professor ‘3D’ Dave’s finishes every gear he starts. This is part 2 of 2, focusing on taking the curves we created in Part 1 and making the final 3D part. New Semester at OTIS

logo_otis Its a new semester at OTIS College of Art and Design where I teach a class in 3D Visualization. This semester has a brand new teaching structure, thank to inspiration from the Khan Academy educatonal website. They pioneered the ‘flipping the classroom’ two-part teaching strategy.

Part one includes viewing all lectures at home via pre-recorded videos. That way, students can watch at their own pace or even view multiple times if needed. The problem being solved is that live classroom lectures are often the wrong pace for a majority of the class; so students can learn at their own pace wherever they watch (or catch up if they missed a class!) Part two is the classroom, where we will now be doing ‘homework.’ This will function as a lab, where all students will get individualized help on their projects.

The challenge to getting this system in place is that you have to design, write, record, and then edit — many hours of video instruction. Since I have been creating courses at for a few years, I now have four courses online and ready to go! Those four courses total 998 minutes or 16 hours and 38 minutes. I had no idea my mouth was so damn big I was so knowledgeable.

The newest course by Professor ‘3D’ Dave was just published this month at Titled ‘Rendering with Rhino and V-Ray: Product Design with Dave Schultze,‘ the course runs 3 hours and covers all of Dave’s best tips, tricks, strategies, and 3D hacks for making spectacular product design renderings. In its first two weeks of release, it has been watched by over 200 people in 33 countries.
